Swanbeck is the one who takes Ethan out of his vacation as he gives the mission briefing details in a modified sunglasses before Ethan choses to accept it. Later, after Ethan recruited a British professional thief, Nyah Nordoff-Hall, he goes to the IMF safe house in Seville, Spain, to meet Swanbeck and receive his field assignment. Then, Ethan is instructed by Swanbeck to recover a stolen item (revealed to be a deadly synthetic virus), Chimera, and bring the sample to the IMF, which he does not in the end of the film despite removing Ambrose.
