The Iron Curtain was the symbolic, ideological, and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II until the end of the Cold War, roughly 1945 to 1991. To the east of the Iron Curtain, the states developed their own international economic and military alliances, COMECON and the Warsaw Pact. Certain nations of Eastern Europe and many in Central Europe were under the control of the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union (or USSR) was never mentioned by name on Mission: Impossible, but was instead commonly referred to as "behind the Iron Curtain".
