Biography[]

At a rendezvous point, Ethan Hunt is found by the IMF and picked up in an SUV. While being transported, the spy is briefed by the Secretary and his Chief Analyst, William Brandt. The Secretary is bound for Washington to turn in his resignation, after the blame for the Kremlin bombing was firmly planted on the IMF. However, after Ethan describes Cobalt's facial features, he is identified by Brandt as a Swedish-born Russian nuclear strategist and fired professor of physics at Stockholm University named Kurt Hendricks. The deranged physicist is accompanied by his right-hand man, a known operative named Marius Wistrom. Now implicated by the Russians in a global terrorist plot, the White House had disavowed the entire ultra-secret agency, by initiating a dreaded black-ops contingency measure called "Ghost Protocol." It meant "no satellite, safe house, support, or extraction." Although Ethan could be returned to Washington to be punished as a "rogue extremist" by the DOD, he would be allowed to escape from government custody - to operate and track down Cobalt on his own. If caught or killed, any member of his team would be branded as terrorists. Then, the Secretary gives Ethan a flash drive containing all his mission details. Suddenly, the SUV is hit by gunfire from Russian security forces loyal to Anatoly Sidorov and his partner, and both the IMF Secretary and driver are killed before the vehicle crashed into the icy water below. Ethan then uses the Secretary's body and a rocket to deceive the vigilance of the Russians as he escapes with Brandt.
